The AI Kondratieff: Will the 6th Wave Save Us or End the Cycle?

by

Every since 1790, the global economy has moved in 50-60 year waves—each driven by a transformative technology. The pattern seems almost mechanical: new tech → wealth creation → speculation → bubble → crash → consolidation → repeat.

Now comes Artificial Intelligence. Is it the 6th Kondratieff Wave? Or is this time different?

The Five Waves

  • 1st (1790-1840): Textiles, Steam Engine
  • 2nd (1840-1890): Railroads, Steel
  • 3rd (1890-1940): Electricity, Chemicals
  • 4th (1940-1990): Oil, Automobiles, Mass Production
  • 5th (1990-2040): Internet, Information Technology

Each wave followed the same arc: innovation → adoption → overinvestment → correction → new normal.

The AI Question

AI fits the pattern: transformative technology, massive investment, speculative frenzy. But there is a twist: AI does not just improve productivity it replaces the human mind.

Previous waves augmented human capabilities: steam → muscles, electricity → speed, internet → connections. AI augments cognition itself. That changes the game.

Three Scenarios

Scenario A: The Great Extension

AI becomes the ultimate productivity tool. Every industry transforms. New wave creates new wealth. The cycle continues with AI as the engine. GDP grows, problems get solved, quality of life improves.

Scenario B: The Great Divergence

AI wealth goes to the few. Automation replaces jobs faster than new ones are created. The gap between owners and workers becomes unbridgeable. Political cycle explodes.

Scenario C: The Great Convergence

AI accelerates everything, but the 60-year debt cycle ends first. AI cannot escape the math. The wave breaks against the wall of debt. We get turbulence, not boom.

The Timing

The 5th wave (internet/IT) is in its autumn. The next wave should emerge around 2025-2035. AI is the candidate. But so was blockchain, so was Web3, so was metaverse.

The difference with AI: it actually works. The question is not whether it will create wealth, but who captures that wealth.

Conclusion

The Kondratieff Wave pattern has held for 230 years. AI could be the 6th wave. But this wave might be different: it does not just change how we work, it changes what work means.

Will AI extend the cycle, or will it be the wave that breaks it? The answer depends on what we do next.

This is not prediction. It is pattern recognition. And pattern recognition is the first step toward wisdom.
